Interlude

“Interlude–a temporary amusement or source of entertainment that contrasts with what went before or after”.  Such was the month of June for us as we left Burundi for a brief interlude.  It was truly a gift of love to us from God as we were able to see family, friends and many who are interested in the work here.

It began with a week in Brussels for a medical conference.  It was delightful to see people we’ve known over the years from other countries continuing to work and serve in their fields of expertise.  It was also interesting to be in the country that has had influence and history with Burundi as it was a territory of Belgium’s until 1962.

From Brussels we went to Cincinnati where we were able to visit family, friends and attend our home church.  What a joy to be able to tell in person the many good things that are happening and to be encouraged by others.  These blooms of summer are a good picture of our inner joy at being with so many care-filled friends.

Other stops included California to see parents, then Washington to see our son and wife, other family and friends.  The last week was some much needed R&R on Vancouver Island in Canada.  Sometimes you don’t realize how much you need to stop moving until you actually stop long enough to realize you’re not moving anymore.  Such was the time in Canada.

Resting was needed and was very good.  We soaked in the sights of blue skies, blue water, long days of summer light and many beautiful sunsets.  We hiked in the ancient trees of the evergreen forests and walked along the rocky beaches.  Nothing like standing next to an 800 year old tree to make one feel young again!

After the week there Randy returned to Burundi from Vancouver while I headed back to California for one last week with more family, interspersed with shopping to fill two suitcases of hard to find items.

From the day we left Burundi my prayer had been to be present in the moment, able to enjoy each person, place and activity rather than continually looking to the next thing before it happened.   I am happy and thankful to say this prayer was well answered during this interlude.  Many thanks to those of you who were a part of this joyful interlude, making it a time of beauty and wonder, enabling us to re-engage with renewed vigor our life and calling in Burundi.

So glad we got to see you during this “Interlude” and thankful to hear how well your time in the US went. I’ve thought a lot about the note you left and some of the challenges you face personally and in the work. We pray faithfully for you. If ever you’d like to skype, let me know! Much love…
